Project Name: Big Energy Data Value Creation within SYNergetic enERGY-as-a-service Applications through trusted multi-party data sharing over an AI big data analytics marketplace - SYNERGY
Description
The SYNERGY project introduces a novel framework in response to the need for “end-to-end” coordination between the electricity stakeholders, not only in business terms but also in exchanging information. The principal delivery of the SYNERGY project is an implementation of big data platform that is tailored for the electricity data value chain. The SYNERGY framework consists of the data architecture that leverages data related to the electricity domain coming from diverse sources and in diverse forms: including but not limited to data retrieved via API connectors, historical data in flat files, statistical derived KPIs, raw sensor/IoT data, meteorological (weather) data, market data, and other data sources. The SYNERGY big data analytics platform enables electricity value chain stakeholders to, at the same time: enhance their data reach and thus convert the "unused capital" stored within the data, improve their internal intelligence; get involved in novel data sharing and trading models, and upscale the decision-making to a collective intelligence level. In a nutshell, SYNERGY via the platform, its analytics and data sharing capabilities and through the derived energy apps is delivering an overall enabler to unlock the electricity data value across the whole chain.
A large-scale contribution such as SYNERGY touches numerous standards but there are two principal "axes" of standards contributions in the project. One comes directly from the design of the SYNERGY architecture, and more specifically the SYNERGY Common Information Model. The other comes from the actual experiences gathered from the SYNERGY Platform implementation in practice in the 21 demo cases of the project assembled over five large scale demo sites.
The objectives of the standardisation are therefore twofold and somewhat challenging - to leverage the process of standardisation beyond the project and to distill the project findings into standardisation and regulatory contributions.

The SYNERGY project principal delivery - the SYNERGY platform and the accompanying energy apps - are based on the SYNERGY reference architecture. The key contribution to proper electricity data handling is the SYNERGY Common Information Model - as a whole - i.e. the model itself along with the model maintenance and perpetuation procedures. The actual implementation of SYNERGY platform provides interaction with numerous additional standards. The relevant standards are multifaceted, multi-layered and interspersed, which is additionally exacerbated with the very broad standards environment for both energy and data contexts.
One of the main novelties of the SYNERGY reference architecture is that its design considers both contexts of big data and electricity value chain with equal importance. The architectural design of the SYNERGY platform closely follows best practices established at the BDVA association and the SYNERGY partners have been quite active in contributing to the BDVA deliveries. SYNERGY also maps well to the SGAM model, a de facto standard in the energy sector. SYNERGY experts have extensively contributed to the BRIDGE initiative Energy Data Exchange Reference Architecture version 3.0.
It is the SYNERGY Common Information Model is what ties the two “worlds” together: respecting the established data models and semantics of electricity value chain, while at the same time being properly designed for the big data perspective of the SYNERGY project. The model and the process of model development and upgrading is a significant contribution to many challenges in the energy sector, becoming more and more dependent on significant amounts of data. During the practical implementation of SYNERGY platform and the applications several challenges have clearly pointed out other gaps in current data and AI standards. Therefore both the design and the implementation phase of the project bring numerous possible contributions to standards landscape.
With the project is nearing its end, and the pilot experiences being wrapped up, and with the standards that could benefit from the project results being quite diverse, the Horizon Standardisation Booster could help us direct the diverse SYNERGY contributions and experiences in the months following the project so that the actual contribution is maximised. In other words, though during the SYNERGY project they have provided some contributions to standardisation processes, it is entirely possible that some are happening that they haven't utilised well enough and they'd like to dedicate extra effort to this. For this reason the selection below of the technical committee they're targeting is only indicative and at this point the key delivery of standardisation task is completed and could serve as guidebook for many possible contributions SYNERGY provides.
