Project Name: Industrial Urban symbiosis and its social, economic and environmental impact on different European regions
In line with the HORIZON-CL4-2021-TWIN-TRANSITION-01-14, SYMSITES’ main objective is to develop new technologies and stakeholders’ engagement methodologies to prove the concept of regional Industrial-Urban Symbiosis (I-US) in four European regions, different in their social-economic, and environmental aspects, from the north, Denmark, through the mid-Austria, and southern Spain and Greece. The four EcoSites will generate virtuous circles of energy, treated waste (converted into new resources) and treated wastewater (WW) streams between urban and industrial entities. The SYMSITES will demonstrate enabling technologies that allow solid waste and WW co-treatment and reuse in a symbiotic way. The following technologies will be developed: i) an anaerobic bioreactor (AnMBR) with an advanced antifouling membrane for the co-treatment of biowastes (BW) and WW, coupled with ii) a tertiary treatment based on adsorption column-based antibacterial and antiviral activated carbon; iii) a pyrolysis system to convert the non-recyclable wastes (NRW) into platform molecules and activated carbon for the adsorption column. This column will be further functionalized with bio-based nanoparticles to be produced from the wastes for antiviral antibacterial activity iv) a newly developed IT-based Regional Management Platform (ITRMP) including novel IoTs, artificial intelligence (AI), and a Social Decision Support System (SDSS) to manage efficiently the I-US.
The project outputs will accelerate the green and digital twin transition of Europe to a circular economy, one of the main scopes defined by the European Commission in March 2020.
