BIOMAC

Project Name: European Sustainable BIObased nanoMAterials Community

Open Call Topic(s): Green transition in Europe

Description

BIOMAC is a Horizon2020 project that has established an Open Innovation Test Bed (OITB), a true collaborative ecosystem where technologies and solutions utilising nano-enabled bio-based materials (NBMs) are being upscaled and prepared for market applications.

The BIOMAC Ecosystem provides open access to its facilities (17 Pilot Lines) and complementary services required for the development, testing and upscaling of materials and products in the field of nano-enabled bio-based products and materials. The Pilots Lines of BIOMAC cover the whole value chain, from biomass fractionation and intermediate chemicals to final NBMs.

After having validated the BIOMAC ecosystem through 5 internal test cases (TeCs) in the fields of automotive, agricultural, food packaging, construction and printed electronics industries, an open call for expression of interest for stakeholders was launched in December, inviting 5 more intra TeCs to assess the OITB. BIOMAC will function as a one-stop-shop accesible at fair conditions and costs through a single entry point, represented by ΙΒΒ Netzwerk.

The ambition of BIOMAC is to boost and sustain innovation in the field of European bio-economy industries, by reducing the time-to-market of novel nanotechnologies, thus reducing cost and risks.

Reason for applying to HSbooster.eu services

We are applying seeking out support to carry out our tasks in standardisation in the projects, very focused on engaging and liaising with standardisation bodies, identifying the sector, which is both quite narrow and quite wide: in the realm of Biobased nanomaterials, BIOMAC operates within 5 test cases (Agriculture, Automotive, Packaging, Agriculture, Printed Electronics) and will add 5 more in summer. We believe the support provided will help us identify the relevant standards and key information in the field, and help us identify which type of actions can we develop to liaise with standardization bodies.

Main Standardisation Interests

The aim of the Standardisation and Regulatory task in BIOMAC is to verify the compliance with standards (EU OSHA, ISO, ASTM, ACEA, EMMC, EMCC, etc.) as well as associations (e.g. ECN, EEA, WRAP etc.) of all project results and defining the specific actions to direct the development activities toward the standards.

We are currently gathering all relevant information on standards and rules in the field of nano-enabled bio-based materials. This is a fundamental step to guarantee that all the subsequent development and exploitation activities are performed in compliance with the requirements. To fully exploit the potentialities of the project outcomes, we will pursue the integration of existing rules with new standards, defined on the basis of the project results.

Since the introduction of new standards is a delicate issue, close collaboration with the appropriate legislation and regulatory bodies will be sought by on a European level. Potential activities could be organising international fora to promote discussions and provide suggestions for amendments on current standards or development of new ones. Through these networking activities, the ecosystem will contribute in the global advancement of the field of nano-enabled bio-based materials.
