SUNRISE

Project Name: Safety assUraNce fRamework for connected, automated mobIlity SystEms

Description

The SUNRISE project develops and demonstrates a CCAM (Cooperative, Connected, and Automated Mobility) Safety Assurance Framework (SAF). The overall objective of the SUNRISE project is to accelerate the large-scale and safe deployment of CCAM systems. In alignment with international twin projects and initiatives, the project aims to achieve this objective by providing a SAF consisting of three main components: a Method, a Toolchain and a Data Framework. The Method is established to support the SAF safety argumentation, and includes procedures for scenario selection, sub-space creation, dynamic allocation to test instances and a variety of metrics and rating procedures. The Toolchain contains a set of tools for safety assessment of CCAM systems, including approaches for virtual, hybrid and physical testing. The Data Framework provides online access, connection and harmonisation of external Scenario Databases (SCDBs), allowing its users to perform query-based extraction of safety relevant scenarios, allocation of selected scenarios to a variety of test environments, and reception of the test results.

One of the main objectives of the SUNRISE project is to cooperate with existing testing and validation approaches in Europe and worldwide, taking into account other industries and domains for harmonisation and standardisation purposes. This collaboration with standardisation bodies is already ongoing through a work package within the project created specifically for cooperation with Vehicle Safety Bodies (VSBs). The aim is to inform the VSBs about the project results and to make them to adopt and apply them. Some standards are already aligned with the SAF developed in Sunrise and the application for this Standardisation Booster is intended to strengthen this further.

SUNRISE aims to align a harmonised safety assurance framework, together with its sub elements across the industry. As part of this alignment, it is crucial to contribute such outcome towards the standardisation activities within the field, to avoid re-inventing the wheel which the SUNRISE has already built a solid foundation on. Especially the attentions should be given to elements covered by the SAF, including scenario creation methodologies, description language, database organisation format, simulation interface, simulation architecture, testing process etc.
