BIOVEXO

Project Name: Biocontrol of Xylella and its vector in olive trees for integrated pest management

Description

BIOVEXO is developing innovative biopesticides to combat Xylella, a plant-pathogenic bacterium threatening olive and almond production in the European Mediterranean region. These biopesticides will reduce reliance on chemical insecticides and support sustainable olive cultivation. Six candidate solutions, including bacterial strains, microbial metabolites, plant extracts, and an entomopathogenic fungus, are being tested for curative and preventive approaches. After validation and formulation improvements, the best-performing biopesticides will be scaled up for evaluation in major Xylella outbreak regions. The project involves academia, industry, SMEs, and associations, ensuring diverse expertise and practical insights from olive growers. Mechanistic understanding, environmental assessments, and regulatory compliance will guide product development for successful market entry. We want to create synergies with standardisation committees to explore further collaboration opportunities based on the knowledge and data generated in the project.
