TwinERGY

Project Name: Intelligent interconnection of prosumers in positive energy communities with twins of<br />things for digital energy markets

Open Call Topic(s): Sustainable digitalisation

Description

TwinERGY introduces a first-of-a-kind Digital Twin framework by incorporating the required intelligence for optimizing demand response at the local level without compromising the well-being of consumers and their daily schedules and operations. The main idea behind the conception of the TwinERGY project lies on the interest of the project partners to exploit the new business opportunities that project implementation delivers and increase the relevance of the DR optimization tools and strategies in the new generation of energy management systems. By coupling mature practice for citizen engagement with service innovation through the lenses of public value, TwinERGY will ensure that a wide range of interests and especially of consumers/prosumers will be represented and supported in the energy marketplace. In this context, TwinERGY develops, configures and integrates an innovative suite of tools, services and applications for consumers, enabling the increase of awareness and knowledge about consumption patterns, energy behaviours, generation/ demand forecasts and an increase of local intelligence via properly established Digital Twin-based Consumer-Centric Energy Management and Control Decision Support mechanisms that locally optimize demand response. Key use cases will be trialled across 4 pilot regions making use of cutting-edge methods and tools. Special focus is given to standardisation and policy & market reform as key enablers for the successful commercialization of the TwinERGY results.

Reason for applying to HSbooster.eu services

The Standardisation Booster service will help the project with the revision of current standards and the definition of the best strategy towards applying them to the project exploitation plan. In order to achieve interoperability and full functionality of digital twins the standards in different phases of the buildings data lifecycle and the standards to domains adjacent to buildings (e.g. smart grid, smart city) should be aligned. Therefore, the Standardisation Booster could help the project with developing or introducing translation or conversion mechanisms between standards in different phases (from static data to dynamic data) and in different domains (from buildings to energy systems).

The project partners are already active in standards working groups (e.g., BRIDGE working groups), and the Booster will facilitate and enhance communication with the standardization community at large. Finally, it will help the project to be aligned with the main EU priorities in terms of standardization and ensure that the project´s results will be used to inform the development of new standards and codes of practice along the DR value chain.

The alignment of the standardisation features in TwinERGY through the Standardisation Booster services will also have a positive effect on the exploitation activities. Particularly, the replicability of the complete solution offered by TwinERGY will be immediately improved, since it will be able to be adopted by demand response projects wherever those standards are being followed. Secondly, the individual advancements of components, products, services and systems developed by the TwinERGY partners will become more exploitable, since they will acquire higher value propositions due to their interoperability features with multiple other suppliers. Overall, the majority of the available data, digital models and tools in TwinERGY will be up-valued and their digital circularity features will be improved.

Main Standardisation Interests

TwinERGY's main interests in standardization are twofold. Primarily, the project aims at delivering an open standards-based communication solution, that ensures interoperability between smart grids, energy management systems and smart home devices. This will ensure a high replication potential of the solution around the EU. In particular, TwinERGY´s Data Management Platform complies with existing open standards in the DR arena (e.g., OpenADR 2.0b, USEF) and utilizes a homogenized Common Information Model to allow the semantic interoperability of the involved assets and ensures seamless integration, and communication and operation on top of any energy management system and smart home devices (Haystack Project, BRICK Schema, SAREF). In addition, TwinERGY aims at exploiting the new business opportunities that the project implementation delivers and increasing the relevance of the DR optimization tools and strategies in the new generation of energy management systems. In this respect, the project will deliver standardisation and regulatory recommendations to foster the uptake of DR solutions across the EU and beyond.
