PREMUROSA

Project Name: Precision medicine for muscoloskeletal regeneration, prosthetics and active ageing

Description

Musculoskeletal diseases are a major burden on individuals, healthcare, and welfare systems. Treatment of musculoskeletal disorders is currently based either on prosthetic or regenerative surgical procedures, often involving medical device implantation. In both cases, individual tissue healing and regeneration, together with the appropriateness of the implanted device, markedly affect the outcome. A great improvement could be achieved by precision medicine, specifically designed on patient’s individual characteristics. This implies combining the personalised clinical approach with individual ‘omic’ characterisation and proper choice of the medical device. The concept is “To take care with care”. This is the meaning of the Italian word “premurosa”, and the goal of the ITN PREMUROSA project aimed to train a new generation of scientists with an integrated vision of the whole value chain in musculoskeletal regeneration technologies and able to boost the necessary innovations to achieve precision principles in developing innovative devices and optimised clinical applications. In this view, innovative in vitro tests to predict tissue around implanted biomaterials, clinical diagnostics, and digital tools to predict the regeneration potential of the patients are developing.

Reason for applying to HSbooster.eu services

The project will benefit from teaching support from experts in the field of standardisation of implantable medical devices and routes to propose new tools to test the safety and efficacy of medical devices.

Correct, updated structured information about standardisation is an important soft skill for early scientific researchers (ESRs) in how we are training in the project.

In addition, because during the ESRs training,  the project has been obtained some exploitation results,  the alignment with standardisation will make them really exploitable.

Main Standardisation Interests

The project PREMUROSA is a MSCA ITN project. Therefore, the main objective is to train young scientists. Nevertheless, some new technologies are developing in the field of implantable devices of biomaterials (i.e. bioactive glasses, titanium with modified surfaces for prosthesis, polymers for intervertebral disk regeneration, and in that of biological characterisation tools more advanced than that stated by ISO 10993 (i.e. experimental set-ups including dynamic conditions, new bioreactors to do this, new in vitro test including 3D engineered tissues, a digital tool to predict responses).
